Donghwa Garden Gangneung: The Original Jjamppong Sundubu (And How to Skip the Line)

Every time I visit Gangneung, I go to Donghwa Garden. Not because it’s on every tourist list — but because it’s genuinely the best bowl of jjamppong sundubu I’ve had, and I keep coming back to confirm that.

I’ve been here multiple times with my family. The first time, I stood in line for over an hour. These days, I walk in within five minutes. The food hasn’t changed. The method has.

What Is Jjamppong Sundubu — And Why Does It Matter?

Donghwa Garden Gangneung: The Original Jjamppong Sundubu (And How to Skip the Line)

If you’ve never heard of jjamppong sundubu, that’s exactly why this post exists.

Jjamppong (짬뽕) is a Korean-Chinese spicy seafood broth — thick, smoky, and deeply savory. Sundubu (순두부) is Korean soft tofu: silky, fresh, and mild. Put them together, and you get jjamppong sundubu. No noodles. Just tofu in a bold broth, served with rice on the side.

It sounds like an unlikely combination. It works completely.

Donghwa Garden is the restaurant that invented this dish. They’ve been making it in Gangneung’s Chodang Tofu Village since 1993, and they still make their tofu fresh every morning starting at 5 AM — using 100% domestically contracted Korean soybeans. The broth is made to order, and the smokiness comes from actual flame, not shortcuts. Thirteen consecutive years on the Blue Ribbon restaurant guide. That’s not noise.

The Waiting Problem — And How to Solve It

Donghwa Garden is always busy. I mean always.

The first time I came here, I didn’t know about the app. I showed up, grabbed a number, and stood outside in the heat for over an hour. The food was worth it, but the wait wasn’t fun — especially with a kid.

Now I use Tabling (테이블링), a Korean restaurant queuing app. Here’s how the remote waitlist works at Donghwa Garden:

  1. Open the Tabling app and find Donghwa Garden
  2. Check the live queue count from wherever you are — your hotel, your car, the beach
  3. Register for remote waitlist when the timing looks right
  4. Drive toward the restaurant. Once you’re within 100 meters of the venue, the app lets you confirm your arrival
  5. Walk in when your number is called

This trip, I monitored the queue from the accommodation and timed our departure. We arrived, confirmed on the app, and were seated within five minutes. That’s the difference between a miserable wait and a smooth morning.

One caveat: on very busy days, Donghwa Garden sometimes disables remote waitlist and requires on-site registration. If that happens, go early. The earlier you arrive, the shorter the line.

Tip: The Jjamppong Sundubu (원조짬순) is only available from 8:30 AM. The restaurant opens at 7:00 AM for other menu items, but if you’re coming specifically for the signature dish — don’t show up too early expecting to order it.

Parking — Staff Guide You In

Parking is managed by staff at the entrance. If the main lot in front is full, they’ll wave you around to the overflow lot at the back. From there, a side path leads directly to the restaurant entrance. No circling, no stress.

The lot fits about 50 cars. On weekend mornings, it fills up fast. Arriving early isn’t just about the queue — it’s about the parking too.

What to Order

The menu is short. That’s a good sign.

ItemKoreanPrice
Original Jjamppong Sundubu원조짬순₩15,000
Chodang Sundubu Baekban초두부₩12,000
Doenjang Jjigae (Fermented Soybean Paste Stew)안송자 청국장₩12,000
Fresh Tofu — Half Block모두부 반모₩6,000
Fresh Tofu — Full Block모두부 한모₩12,000

We ordered the Original Jjamppong Sundubu and a half block of fresh tofu (모두부 반모) on the side.

If you’re traveling with kids: order the fresh tofu separately. The jjamppong broth has a kick — not intense, but enough that younger kids might struggle. The plain tofu is mild, neutral, and lets them eat something while you work through the main bowl.

What It Actually Tastes Like

The broth is red. When it arrives at the table, the color looks more aggressive than it is.

The actual heat level is moderate — spicier than a mild dish, but nowhere near the level the color implies. What hits you first isn’t spice. It’s the smokiness. The char from the wok comes through clearly in every spoonful. That’s what makes this different from regular sundubu jjigae.

The tofu holds its shape but melts as you eat it. Ladled into the broth with rice mixed in — the whole bowl disappears faster than expected.

My daughter ate the fresh tofu with soy sauce on the side. She also wrapped pieces in the baekkimchi (white kimchi) that came with the banchan. That white kimchi is made from the soybean whey left over from the tofu-making process — it has a clean, cool flavor with almost no heat. She kept reaching for it throughout the meal.

For what it is — a bowl of perfectly made tofu in an expertly built broth — ₩15,000 is reasonable.

After the Meal: Sundubu Gelato Next Door

Right across from Donghwa Garden is the Sundubu Gelato flagship store (순두부젤라또 1호점). This is worth the stop. The gelato is made with sundubu — it tastes creamy and faintly nutty, somewhere between soft tofu and a light ice cream. Unusual in the best way. Good for kids, good for adults, good for the walk back to the car.

About Chodang Tofu Village

Donghwa Garden sits in Chodang-dong, Gangneung’s tofu village. The neighborhood has been making tofu with East Sea seawater for generations — the mineral content of the water gives Chodang tofu a distinct flavor that differs from regular commercial tofu.

The street is lined with sundubu restaurants. If the wait at Donghwa Garden is too long on a given day, there are solid alternatives nearby. But Donghwa Garden is the one that set the standard. The others are measured against it.
