Shilla Monogram Gangneung Residence Review: Hotel or Residence — Which One Should You Book?

Last weekend, I took my family on a trip to Gangneung. We packed a lot in — but before I get to the rest of it, I want to talk about where we stayed.

If you’re planning a trip to Gangneung and wondering whether to book the Shilla Monogram Hotel or the Residence — I stayed at the Residence for two nights with my family and I’ll break it all down for you.

Shilla Monogram Gangneung opened in July 2025. It’s the first Shilla Monogram property in Korea — the brand previously launched in Da Nang, Vietnam back in 2020. Hotel Shilla positions it as an “upper upscale” lifestyle brand, sitting between their flagship The Shilla and the more budget-friendly Shilla Stay.

The short answer: I was satisfied. But with conditions. Let me explain.

Hotel vs. Residence — For Families, There’s Only One Answer

Shilla Monogram Gangneung operates as a combined complex — a Hotel wing and a Residence wing, connected but distinctly different in what they offer.

The Hotel is sleek and calm. If you’re a couple looking for a quiet stay, it works. But if you’re traveling with kids, the Residence is the clear choice — and it’s not close.

The in-room microwave might sound like a small thing. It’s not. Being able to heat up food, warm a drink, or reheat leftovers from a convenience store run changes the whole character of a family stay. Add a full-size fridge with a separate freezer, a long sofa where the kids can stretch out, and easier parking — the Residence wins on every practical dimension.

I’d say it’s better than most standard hotels. The space isn’t huge, but every square meter is used well.

8th Floor Ocean View: What It’s Actually Like

I stayed on the 8th floor. When I opened the curtains for the first time, the East Sea was right there — a wide stretch of deep blue filling the entire window. It was genuinely striking. That’s the moment you feel like the drive from Seoul was worth it.

Every room in the Residence faces the ocean. Higher floors will give you a wider, more open view, but the 8th floor was more than enough. Waking up to that view in the morning — before the day’s plans kick in — is one of those things that’s hard to put a price on.

Room rates start at around ₩300,000 per night in the off-peak season, varying by room type and date. For that view, it’s fair.

The Underground Tunnel to the Beach — and Where to Buy Beer

This is one of the Residence’s best features, and most people don’t know about it before they arrive.

On basement level 1, there’s a GS convenience store. Right next to it, a long corridor — about 100 meters — runs straight to the beach. No car, no parking, no fuss. Slippers on, walk down, and you’re at the water.

Here’s the useful detail: the GS convenience store inside the Residence is an unstaffed automated store, which means it doesn’t sell alcohol. But the second GS store at the end of the tunnel — the one right at the beach exit — is fully staffed and sells alcohol. If you’re planning on picking up drinks for the room or the beach, that’s the one to use.

Coming back in, there’s a basic rinse station at the tunnel entrance. You can wash the sand off your feet and legs before heading up. With a kid who spent an hour doing sand play, this matters more than it sounds.

The Pool: Worth Paying For, But Book Early

The pool is not free. Even as a guest, you pay per session. When I first saw that, I raised an eyebrow — but after using it, I understood. The reservation system keeps the crowd manageable.

Children under 37 months are free. You book through a QR code given at check-in — do it immediately after you arrive, especially on weekends or during peak season. Popular time slots fill up fast.

The indoor pool feels a bit like an enclosed bathhouse — functional, but not the vibe. Go outside. The outdoor pool is the one worth your time. It’s heated, so the water is warm even outside of summer. There’s a dedicated kids’ pool with shallow water depth — floaties are fine, but balls and water guns aren’t allowed. Most of the guests were families, which made it a relaxed, comfortable environment for kids.

The poolside bar serves food and drinks — beer, chicken, pizza. You can order while you’re in the water.

Breakfast: Expensive, and We Skipped It

The breakfast buffet runs at Dining M on the ground floor of the Residence. We didn’t try it — but the price alone told us enough.

The price: ₩42,000 per adult, ₩24,000 per child (ages 3–12). Under 37 months is free.

For a family of three, that’s over ₩100,000 for a single breakfast. We passed. My daughter likes sleeping in anyway, and that money goes a long way at the restaurants near the resort. Gangneung has no shortage of good food nearby.

One thing to note: if you book a package that includes breakfast, you cannot cancel it on-site. Check before you book whether the package pricing actually makes sense for your group.

Who This Place Is Right For

Shilla Monogram Gangneung Residence is not a perfect resort. The pool costs extra. Breakfast is expensive. You’ll need to venture out for meals.

But if you want to wake up to an ocean view, walk to the beach through a basement tunnel, let your kids play in a heated outdoor pool, and have a real fridge and microwave waiting in your room — Gangneung doesn’t have many options that check all of those boxes at once.

For a family looking for a well-organized, comfortable base on the East Sea, this is a strong choice.
